When you think of a family vacation, the phrase “low-cost” doesn’t often come to mind. However, Beech Mountain offers lots of opportunities for fun that are free or very inexpensive.
The Sledding Hill, for children 12 and under, is a prime example of a free activity that you won’t find anywhere else in North Carolina. Operating from 1-5 on weekdays and 9-5 on weekends, the hill is fully staffed with safety attendants and boasts a dedicated snow gun for full coverage when natural snow is sparse.
Several community bonfires, complete with hot chocolate, cider and s’mores take place throughout the ski season, and are also free of charge. Sometimes, these events are combined with hayrides, for an added shot of pure fun. Most of these Chamber events are co-sponsored by the Beech Mountain Recreation Center, where a “Family Fun Pack” can be purchased for $30, giving week-long access to fitness classes, a 24-hour weight room, a full gym, internet access and a kid’s playroom.
The Town of Beech Mountain maintains 30+ miles of public trails for hikers and mountain bikers year-round. All are free of charge, though a complete map of all trails will set you back a dollar.
The Beech Mountain Resort works hard to make skiing accessible and affordable for everyone. They offer a wide array of discounts for advanced purchases, group discounts, package deals with local lodging, and special events. There is still time during the month of January to take advantage of the “Learn to Ski” package with a lift ticket, lesson and equipment rental for only $45 on weekdays. February 21-23 will bring another set of discounts and lodging specials, as the resort sponsors “Retro 80’s” weekend.
Give us a call at the Beech Mountain Chamber and let us help you create a memorable vacation that your whole family will enjoy.
The Town of Beech Mountain is pleased to welcome Sandy Carr to her new position as the Director of the Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department.
“We are fortunate to have someone of her background and experience filling this important role for us” says Town Manager Randy Feierabend. Sandy has worked over 30 years in management, promotions and events planning. She and her husband Kevin reside on the mountain and can often be found volunteering at local events and functions.
Sandy Carr began her new position on Monday, February 17, 2014. She welcomes your ideas and comments, and can be reached at the Rec Center at 828-387-3003.
New this year at Beech Mountain Resort is a skybar at the summit called “5,506.”
The name is derived from the resort’s elevation, which makes it the highest ski bar on the East Coast.
The glass roundhouse provides food and beverage service inside, plus a 2,700-square-foot deck for relaxing or hanging with friends. New restrooms beside the bar should also be a hit.
